Nonimmigrant and Immigrant Visas

NIV Logo

Nonimmigrant Visas
Nonimmigrant Visas (NIV) are for international travelers, (citizens of other countries), coming to the Unites States temporarily. This visa allows you to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (an airport, for example) and request permission of the Department of Homeland Security immigration inspector to enter the U.S. A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States.

International travelers come to the U.S. for a wide variety of reasons, including tourism, study, business, medical treatment and certain types of temporary work.

For more information about the different nonimmigrant visas, please check our NIV visa categories.

Nonimmigrant Visas are processed at the following consulates:

•Ankara - All Nonimmigrant visa classes.

•Istanbul - All Nonimmigrant visa classes.

Please read our Customer Service Statement as we are committed to the essential openness for which the United States has always been known. Travel to the United States is welcomed and encouraged.

Important Announcement

  • IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs is currently experiencing technical problems with our overseas passport and visa systems.  This issue is not specific to any particular country, citizenship document, or visa category. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working urgently to correct the problem and restore full operability.
Passport applications accepted overseas or after May 26, 2015 are affected by this delay.  If you applied for a U.S. passport overseas during this time frame and have travel plans within the next 10 business days, please consider requesting an emergency passport at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate at which you originally applied. Information about how to apply for an emergency passport is available on our website.
Applications for a U.S. visa made after June 8, 2015, are also affected by this delay.  Nonimmigrant visa applicants who did not submit their DS-160 online application prior to June 9, 2015, should reschedule their interview appointments.  Individuals with urgent travel should contact us at http://turkey.usembassy.gov/emergency_appoinments.html.

Our visa processing systems have begun to be restored, and we now have limited capacity to print visas for applicants previously interviewed.  If your passport was returned to you without a visa due to the systems outage you may now submit your passport back to our office for visa printing.

After your passports and/or missing documents are received, a consular officer will review your case again.  If everything is in order, your visa packet will be prepared and sent to the PTT office which you chose. This process may take several additional days.

We will make every effort to issue visas to eligible applicants within the month June.  However due to ongoing systems issues, we may continue to experience delays printing visas in certain cases.

We apologize to applicants and recognize that this may cause hardship to applicants waiting for visas.
