Description of Sites
ABANT IZZET BAYSAL UNIVERSITY
Abant
Izzet Baysal University (AIBU) is located in Bolu, Turkey, about 150
miles northeast of Ankara. Bolu is a convenient and scenic location.
It lies just off the highway that joins Ankara and Istanbul, and the
campus is set on top of a hill overlooking the small town of Bolu,
several lakes, and pine forests. The total student population at AIBU
is 20,000. The English Language Teaching (ELT) department, founded in
1994, currently has an enrollment of 120 students. There are 10
faculty members in the ELT department, several of whom have
international experience. This year an evening undergraduate program
has begun and 30 more students have joined the ELT major. A small MA
program in ELT exists; this year 5 new students joined the program.
The Junior Fellow posted at AIBU is responsible for teaching several
academic content courses (Psycholinguistics, Testing and Evaluation,

ANADOLU
The
Junior Fellow is assigned to the Foreign Languages department's English
preparatory program, which has an enrolment of 2,300 for the 2005-2006
academic year. Students receive 28 hours of intensive English language
instruction per week, with special emphasis on listening/speaking and
grammar. The Fellow is expected to contribute to the students'
successful completion of examinations and matriculation to the regular

CUKOROVA
Cukorova
University ranks as one of Turkey’s 10 most prominent universities and
is the leading university in the southeast region. The ELT Department
in the Faculty of Education trains approximately 1,000 students to
become teachers of English and works with local teachers to support
in-service training. The Research and Application Center for Teaching
Foreign Language Preparatory Program is for undergraduate and graduate
students. Cukorova University has 10 faculties, 3 colleges, 7
vocational colleges, 2 graduate institutes, 26 research and application

ERCIYES
The
English Language and Literature Department at Erciyes University in
Kayseri opened in the academic year of 1993-94. The aim of the
department is to provide students with necessary English Language and
Literature education through a versatile approach.
There are 210
students in the department including both undergraduate and
postgraduate levels. The number of students who already have graduated
is 284. In order to graduate students take 138 credit hours, 126 of
which are required and 12 of which are elective. In addition, students
take four years of a second foreign language plus they are able to take
pedagogy courses, which provide them with a teaching certificate at the
end of their four years. The Department Library has 2500 books on
literature and linguistics. One of the classrooms is equipped with a
DVD-VCD players and video cassette. There is also a computer laboratory

GAZI
Founded
in 1926 by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Gazi University is the oldest teacher
training university in Turkey. The 1000 undergraduate students, 20
Masters students and 5 PhD students in the ELT department are proud to
be members of one of the oldest ELT departments in Turkey. A highly
qualified and dedicated staff uses modern methodology to prepare their

ISTANBUL
Istanbul
University, situated in a 552 year old campus that has been various
educational institutions throughout the centuries, was founded in 1924
in the early days of the Turkish Republic. Istanbul University is one
of the largest universities in Turkey with more than 49,000 students
and almost 5,000 teachers in 17 faculties, 10 training schools, and
various departments. As the student and faculty numbers have grown over
the years, the university has spread to various parts of the city.
However, the administration and many faculties, including education,
are still located at the original campus in the historic district of
Istanbul in Beyazit. The Hasan Ali Yucel Education Faculty includes
over 1,550 students and 92 teachers. The Department of Foreign Language
Education trains almost 800 students every year to be teachers of
English, French and German. Of these, the English Teacher Training
Department is the largest with approximately 450 students and 9
teachers. Another area where foreign language study is the focus is the
School of Foreign Languages, which has 900 students and 92 teachers.

KARADENIZ TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY
Karadeniz
Technical University (KTU) has approximately 42000 students from
various cities. There are 22 faculties, 1 conservatory, 3 schools, 13
Vocational Schools, 3 institutes, 16 research centers and 1781 staff
members. The Western Languages and Literature department houses 275
students. The department also has an ELT component. Last year the
department added a teacher certificate program which allows graduates
to teach in public schools; the aim of about 70% of the students. Nine
full time instructors teach literature, drama, short stories, literary

MUGLA
Although
Mugla University in southwestern Turkey was only founded in 1992, it
already has more than 20,000 students. Established in 2000 and still
experiencing some growing pains, the ELT faculty has two teachers and
325 students. The department issues a BS in Education that integrates a
research-based program with practical applications of pedagogy and
methodology. Students learn classroom action research, and have three
semesters of observation/practice teaching in local schools. The
program was adopted after extensive study and observation of American
schools of education.
The Higher School of Foreign Languages has 69
teachers and 780 students. As students take English full time for a
year, the School of Foreign Languages is striving to align its testing
and curriculum to the Common European Framework (CEF) and set the
standards and expectations for the students for the next four years.
The
university is striving to become one of the leaders in Turkey in
technical education with campuses speared over a wide area including

SELCUK
Selcuk
University is the second largest university in Turkey with more than
70,000 students, 3,100 teachers, 2 campuses, 2 medical schools with 2
research hospitals, the Rectory Administration Offices and 25 regional
vocational schools. Located in the middle of a vast Anatolian plain,
Konya was once the capital of the mighty 11th century Selcuk Turkish
Empire which gives the university its name. Today Konya is a thriving
and conservative city where ancient ruins from the beginning of
civilization blend with modern trams, shopping centers and world famous
whirling dervishes. Founded in 1975, Selcuk University has 1,000
students in the English Language Teaching Department and is a widely
respected teacher training institute throughout Turkey. The ELT
graduates are generally expected to become English teachers. The
distinguished Faculty of Letters has 600 students who are developing
literary appreciation from the best of English literature. Selcuk
University is in the process of developing American Studies curriculum
with a broad focus on culture, literature, drama and poetry. Selcuk
University offers a wide variety of sporting, cultural, scientific and
technological activities to a vibrant student population. The potential

TAA
Founded
in 1951, the Turkish-American Association is the bi-national center in
Ankara associated with the American Embassy. The TAA has 28 teachers
and approximately 600 students in the English program. A wide range of
courses are offered - from children’s courses to the English TEFL
Centre's EFL Teaching Certification course. TAA is the official testing
center for TOEFL, GRE, GMAT and SAT and offers preparation courses for
these exams. In addition to an excellent general library, there is also
a Teacher Resource Center which provides the Ankara English teaching
community with a wide selection of teacher development books, regular
teacher training sessions, and brown bag lunch discussions. The TAA is

art exhibitions and conferences are held at the TAA in support of its
