Ambassador Ross Wilson Welcomes the Harlem Globetrotters in AnkaraOn Saturday November 4 Ambassador Ross Wilson hosted a reception in honor of the Harlem Globetrotters. The Globetrotters, in Turkey to play in Izmir, Ankara and Istanbul, signed autographs, took photos and chatted with the delighted Turkish and American guests.

The Ambassador and Ms. Squire were warmly welcomed by the center staff and briefed by the center’s director, Emine Sirin. In the spirit of Seker Bayram (Sugar Holiday), the Ambassador and Ms. Squire handed out candy to the students and chatted with them and their families.

In an interview in the September 24 Milliyet newspaper, Ambassador Wilson discusses the role of the Special Envoy for Countering PKK Terrorism, Cyprus, Turkey’s EU process, the status of Kirkuk, and US-Turkish relations. Commenting on the upcoming meeting between Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Bush, Ambassador Wilson said, "Turkey is important to the United States, and the United States is important to Turkey, and it is, therefore, important that our two leaders have regular contacts and have frank and open discussions."...More

In commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, the US Mission in Turkey made a donation to the Association for Aid and Solidarity with the Families of Martyrs from the Security Services (EMSAD). Ambassador Ross Wilson visited Mersin on August 31 to thank people who assisted during the evacuation of American Citizens from Lebanon in July. Ambassador Wilson met with Governor Aksoy, Mayor Ozcan as well as representatives of the security services, the Mersin port and the Red Crescent. The Ambassador also toured the ancient city of Tarsus, visiting a Roman road which is believed to be 2100 years old and the Ulu Mosque, an 11th century structure that was originally a church.

This summer 50 teachers and 100 students from Ankara secondary schools took part in the English Access Summer Institute and Day Camp, a special activity in the English Access Microscholarship Program, organized by the English Language Office of the American Embassy in Ankara. In addition to playing sports, singing songs and playing language games, visiting artist Jennifer Janak from Texas worked with the teachers and students to design and paint an outdoor mural at the program site, Haci Omer Tarman Anadolu Lisesi.

| Turkish Immigration officers help to speed the process. |
On July 24 the USS Trenton arrived in the Mediterranean port of Mersin carrying approximately 1650 passengers, mostly American citizens and their families who were leaving Lebanon. The passengers were met at the port by staff from the US Mission in Turkey, volunteers from the State Department and Airmen from nearby Incirlik Air Base. After speedy processing by Turkish customs officials, they proceeded to Incirlik Air Base where planes met them to take them to the US. By July 31 the US citizens and their families had returned home. "We appreciate the cooperation and assistance of the Turkish government authorities in working with us on this important humanitarian work. It would have been impossible without Turkey’s help. The United States Government and the American people are very, very grateful," said Ambassador Ross Wilson.

| US Citizens Arrive in Turkey |
On July 24 the USS Trenton carrying over 1600 US citizens and their families arrived in the Turkish Mediterranean port of Mersin. On their way home from Lebanon to the US, the US citizens were greeted upon arrival by staff from the US Mission in Turkey and taken to Incirlik Air Base where they will stay before flying back to the US. "The United States government and the American people are very grateful to Turkey for its assistance during this dramatic time in the Middle East," said Ambassador Ross Wilson.

On July 5 US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul unveiled a Strategic Vision Document to advance the Turkish-American strategic partnership and outline a process for continued structured dialogue between the two nations. At a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Gul, Secretary Rice called Turkey a “strong and important partner” of the United States.

Celebrating US Independence Day in Ankara |
To celebrate the 230th anniversary of US independence, the US Mission in Turkey held receptions in Izmir, Ankara, Adana and Istanbul. The celebrations in Ankara at the Ambassador’s Residence included live music, food from the fifty states and a fireworks display. The Izmir reception featured a performance by US breakdance troupe HaviKoro and in Adana and Istanbul the Ambassador entertained distinguished guests with live music in a festive atmosphere.

Ambassador Ross Wilson visited Izmir June 26 and 27 to meet with area leaders to learn about opportunities in the region for increased US-Turkish cooperation and investment. In meetings with the Governor, Mayor, heads of business organizations and faculty and students at Izmir Economic University, the Ambassador exchanged views on ways to extend ties. The Ambassador also hosted an early US Independence Day reception held by the Aegean Free Trade Zone Development and Operating Company (ESBAS) at the Space Camp Turkey facility. ..more

Ambassador Ross Wilson visited the southeastern cities of Diyarbakir, Mardin and Sanliurfa May 26 - 29. The Ambassador met with officials and visited some of the region’s impressive cultural and historic sites. Konya students graduate from the ACCESS program |
On May 24 and May 27, students and teachers in the US State Department English Access Microscholarship Program in Konya participated in a graduation ceremony marking a conclusion to the six-month English-language program. Participants received certificates signed by Ambassador Ross Wilson and a farewell gift book. On April 27 Ambassador Ross Wilson visited the Ankara Chamber of Industry Organized Industrial Zone to meet with business leaders and discuss the US-Turkish trade relationship. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited Turkey April 25-26 as part of her April 24-28 trip to the region. While in Ankara, Secretary Rice met with Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Ahmed Necdet Sezer. At a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Gul, Secretary Rice commented, "Let me just say that we have had no better ally and no stronger supporter of the efforts that we are all making to see a democratic Middle East." ..more

From February 17 to March 7 the U.S. Department of Justice and the Turkish Ministry of Justice held a joint workshop to examine the methods of “following the money” to identify high-level criminals, develop strong cases for prosecution and adjudication, and develop methods for the seizure of the proceeds of crime.
