Pablita Velarde was born in 1916 at Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, to Marianita Chavarria and Herman Velarde, a farmer who was active in tribal government. She spoke only Tewa and was taught traditional Pueblo values and attitudes through stories told by elders. At the age of six, she was sent to Catholic boarding school in Santa Fe, and she later transferred to the Santa Fe Indian School, where she graduated in 1936. Two women who taught at the School particularly inspired her: Tonita Peña, a Tewa woman of San Ildefonso ancestry, and raised at Cochiti Pueblo; and Dorothy Dunn, a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago and a former reservation teacher. In time, Velarde became recognized as a public spokesperson, and in 1960, with the release of her book, Old Father the Storyteller, she became the first Pueblo Indian woman to be published. Over her seventy-year career, she was the subject of numerous exhibitions, and her work is in several private and public collections, including the Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the, Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe. She has always interpreted Pueblo life from a woman’s perspective, and has been an outspoken advocate of women’s rights, choosing themes that express women’s interests. As she once said, "Painting was not considered woman’s work in my time. A woman was supposed to just be a woman, like a housewife and mother and chief cook. Those were the things I wasn’t interested in." Her unconventional life has given other women the courage to become painters, film makers, writers, sculptors, and historians. Velarde’s paintings represent the strength of Pueblo cultural identity to Indians and non-Indians alike.

Dan Namingha is from the Tewa-Hopi tribe, and studied at the University of Kansas, Lawrence; the Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico; and the American Academy of Art, Chicago, Illinois. In his thirty year career, he has exhibited his work in numerous galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad, including the American Craft Museum, New York City; the Heard Museum, Phoenix, Arizona; the Palm Springs Desert Museum, California; the National Museum, Sofia, Bulgaria; and the Kunstlerhaus, Gallery of Fine Arts, Vienna, Austria, among others. Namingha’s works reflect unwavering respect for the earth and spirit of his ancestry, the beautiful heritage that is the heart of his creativity. He is constantly drawn to his roots – so deeply embedded in ceremony – yet allows the viewer only a guarded glimpse of his sacred tradition; the spirit messengers, the katsinas representing blessings, ancestors and cloud people . . . all of these forming the interim of visage between the physical and the spirit world. Janet Nelson (1955) Art and religion are two words that have no equivalents in Native American languages, yet these intensely spiritual people create objects for everyday use that are unsurpassed for sheer beauty. Janet Nelson has conceived a unique method of replicating these artifacts using contemporary materials: painted mixed polymers and paper laminated with wood glue. These materials are then distressed to give the look of an old piece.

Coal miners in Zonguldak, Turkey, circa 1950, where Marshall Plan programs helped modernize equipment to turn the mines into a reliable energy source for Europe. |
On June 5, 1947, U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall addressed the graduating class at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, delivering a 12-minute speech that changed the world. Within days, his remarks became known as the Marshall Plan. By the time the Marshall Plan ended in 1952 – five years after Marshall’s speech – the United States had invested $13.3 billion, and the years 1948 to 1952 had recorded the fastest economic growth in European history. As a neutral nation in World War II, Turkey did not suffer war damage. However, because of its growing ties with Western Europe, Turkey received $225 million in Marshall Plan funds to modernize its infrastructure as part of project linking it more closely with the European economy.

Bush’s Freedom Agenda, the United States views freedom of the press as a key component of democracy. 4/19/2007 - Incirlik Air Base Turkey -- In just three days, the US, Turkey and Afghanistan worked together on a joint mission transporting more than 135,000 pounds of Turkish equipment and supplies from Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, to Kabul AB, Afghanistan. The entire Turkish equipment load was transported by C-17 Globemaster IIIs assigned to the 385th Air Expeditionary Group here. Supplies including two helicopters, an ambulance, a tractor and numerous shipping containers were loaded by an assortment of Reserve, Guard and active duty members which make up the 728th Air Mobility Squadron. "My team was responsible for loading and securing the equipment before transport," said Staff Sgt. James Pickel, 728th AMS Ramp Services shift supervisor. The loading process can take up to several hours and is typically done five to six hours prior to take off Sergeant Pickel said. His three-man team was able to load one third of the total cargo for this mission in just under two hours April 16. "I think this (mission) only goes toward strengthening the special relationship between the U.S. and Turkey and gives us more to build on in the future," said Maj. "The equipment we delivered today and the equipment that we will continue to bring in the future affects the broader success of the Global War on Terrorism," he said.

Assistant Secretary for European Affairs Dan Fried testified in the House of Representatives this week. In his testimony Assistant Secretary Fried reaffirmed the Bush Administration’s policy on the events of 1915. According to Assistant Secretary Fried, “We believe that House Resolution 106 (regarding the events of 1915) would undercut voices emerging in Turkey who called for a truthful exploration of these events in pursuit of Turkey's reconciliation with its own past and with Armenia. Members of the Armenian-Turkish community tell us that such resolutions would stifle the dialogue they seek and would even raise popular emotions so dramatically as to threaten the progress they have made in Turkey. Our goal is an opening of the Turkish mind and the Turkish heart through honest, if painful, self-examination. We fear that passage of any such resolutions would close minds and harden hearts.
