1. My visa application is subject to additional administrative processing; when can I expect to receive my visa? You can monitor the progress of your application online at http://turkey.usembassy.gov/administrative_processing.html by entering your barcode number (application ID). As soon as the Nonimmigrant Visa Unit is able to take further action in your case, you will receive a notification e-mail.

2. What should I do if I cannot see my number on your website? Some nonimmigrant visa applications require additional administrative processing, some applications do not.  Therefore, it might mean that you do not have an administrative process going on; or that your number was not entered on our website.  If you were told by the Consular officer about an administrative processing on your application during your interview, please send us an email at AnkaraNIV@state.gov

3. What does “your administrative process is pending” mean?  Your case is still pending administrative processing. The Embassy cannot issue you a visa before completion of this process. The Embassy cannot waive this processing or influence the amount of time this processing may take. Please do not contact the Embassy while your application is being processed as we will not be able to assist you.

4. Why is my administrative process taking longer than the average duration? Delays in processing can and will occur. The processing times quoted are approximate and cannot be guaranteed. It is important that you keep this in mind when applying for the visa. We cannot expedite cases.

5. How should I track the delivery of my passport after I send it to the Consular Section? Your visa application will take approximately 5 workdays to process before being handed to the courier company for delivery. On receipt of your passport, the courier company will send you an email or an SMS containing your tracking number. You can use this tracking number to follow the delivery of your passport via our Visa Information Service (0850 252 6355).

6. Can I pick up my spouse’s visa as well? If you were present with other members of your family at the same interview the first time you applied, you may submit their passports at the Embassy. However, every adult is expected to pick up his/her passport from the courier office in person.  If an adult applicant is not present to pick up his/her visa, another person may pick it up with a power of attorney taken from the Turkish authorities.

7. I applied for a student visa. Would my clearance still be valid if I decide to change schools? Unfortunately it is not going to be valid. You can send us an email AnkaraNIV@state.gov or try to contact us during public phone hours; +90-312-455-5555 between 11:00 - 12:00, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

8. I am a derivative/dependent (F2/J2/H4 etc).  Can I pick up my visa if my process is completed before the principal applicant (F1/J1/H1B etc)?  No. We need to wait for the principal applicant’s visa to be issued before we can issue yours.

9. Is there any information or documentation that I can provide to expedite my administrative process? No, if need be we will contact you via phone or email. You should not be sending any information or documentation if you are not asked to.

10. My friend got a multiple entry student/exchange visitor visa valid for 2 years. Why did I receive a single entry student visa with only 3 month validity?  Under U.S. law, some student/exchange visitor visas are granted multiple entry and 2 years of validity. Others need to be limited.  Consular officers evaluate the applications on a case by case basis, and decide which application gets full/limited validity in compliance with the law.

Please Note:

  • The Consular Section strongly encourages you NOT to buy your tickets or make travel arrangements until after your visa is approved and you have it in hand.  The Consular Section cannot guarantee that your visa will be approved and cannot be responsible for the consequences of your decision to buy a non-refundable plane ticket.
