IMMIGRANT VISAS

Lost Green Cards

I-551 Permanent Resident Alien Registration Cards (commonly known as "green cards") can be issued or replaced ONLY by the U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services in the US. The Embassy is unable to issue a replacement green card.

If your green card has been lost, the Embassy may be able to issue you a transportation letter that would permit you to return to the United States. In order for the Embassy to issue such a letter, a consular officer must first interview the returning alien. There is a $165 processing fee for the transportation letter. This fee must be paid at the time the transportation letter is issued.

For assistance with a lost green card please contact the Immigrant Visa Unit by phone at (90)(312) 455-5555 or by e-mail. You will be scheduled an appointment to come to the Consular Section from 13:00-13:30, Monday through Thursday. Bring your passport, your alien registration number, a police report (with English translation), and proof that you have not been outside the United States for more than 12 months (such as an airplane ticket).
