U.S. Consular Agency to be Established in Izmir

Ankara, January 7, 2005. Effective January 21, 2005, the US Consulate in Izmir will change status to become a consular agency. A consular agent will be identified in the very near future to serve in this capacity. With the establishment of a consular agency, there will be no change in the range of services provided by the U.S. Government to the people of Izmir and the surrounding region.
There will be no change in procedures for visa services. Visa applicants from Izmir and the surrounding region will continue to call 212-340-4444 to request visa interview appointments that will be conducted at the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul. Information on visa applications can also be obtained from the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Consulate General websites at http://ankara.usembassy.gov and http://istanbul.usconsulate.gov.
American citizen services will be provided by the new consular agency. These services include accepting U.S. passport applications for processing by the U.S. Embassy in Ankara and providing notarial services. In the brief interim period until a new consular agent is in place, American citizens requiring service should contact the U.S. Embassy’s consular section on 312-468-6106 Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 5:30 and for emergencies 312-455-5555 after working hours.
The operations of the U.S. Commercial Service in Izmir will continue without change at the commercial office’s current location on Atatürk Caddesi 126/5, Izmir. The commercial office can be contacted on 232-441-2446.
The U.S. consular agency will operate from the current location of the American Consulate at 1387 Sokak 8/1, Alsancak, Izmir, telephone 232-464-8755.
Staff from the U.S. Embassy in Ankara and the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul will continue to visit Izmir on a regular basis to maintain and expand contacts with local officials and citizens. The U.S. Government remains fully committed to frequent and close dialogue with the people of Izmir and the surrounding region.
