Theodore Roosevelt to visit Marmaris

Ankara, February 16, 2006

The USS Theodore Roosevelt, a United States aircraft carrier, and its nearly 5,300 sailors arrived in Marmaris, Turkey on Thursday, February 16, 2006, for a port visit.

The Theodore Roosevelt recently entered the Mediterranean after four months on station in the Arabian Gulf conducting Maritime Security Operations and supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“The sailors of the Theodore Roosevelt team are really looking forward to our visit to Marmaris. Many have been here before and know the beauty and hospitality found in Turkey,” said Capt. J.R. Haley, USS Theodore Roosevelt’s commanding officer.  “Its rich history, nice restaurants and great shopping, make it the perfect stop on our way home.”

The carrier, which is nearly 1,100 feet long (335 meters) and over 23 stories tall, carries approximately 70 aircraft and is capable of traveling in excess of 30 knots (56 kilometers per hour).

The USS Theodore Roosevelt is expected to return home to Norfolk in mid-March.
