Ambassador Ricciardone hosted a reception on March 22, 2012 in honor of Safak Pavey who recently received the State Department’s “2012 International Women of Courage Award” from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Pavey, the first disabled female deputy to be elected to the Parliament, was honored with an award for championing the rights of the disabled in Turkey.

Speaking at the reception, Ambassador Ricciardone said Pavey has been the “voice of the voiceless” with everything she has done for years, and that passion and creativity prevailed in everything she does.” He continued that Pavey has been an inspiration for not only Turks or women but all around the world. “Courage is in the genes of this family” because 16 years ago, then-First Lady Clinton had given an award for courageous reporting to Ayse Oncel, Safak Pavey’s mother.

In her comments, Pavey said “this Courage Award is not only about me. I believe I received this award for all of Turkey’s brave-hearted women. I think each award’s characteristic and importance is in fact to attract attention to the problems and it’s not about the individual.”
